General Practice Dentistry
Curriculum at Lehigh Valley Hospital-17th Street
This is a one-year ADA accredited residency program designed to provide the dental graduate with an understanding of systemic disease, its relationship to oral disease and the application of this knowledge to comprehensive treatment of dental patients. The four residents practice in the dental clinic facility at Lehigh Valley Hospital-17th Street in Allentown, Pa. The residents are supervised by the program director and over 40 regularly scheduled volunteer attendings who are available for consultation and guidance. Frequent interaction with medical personnel ensures that patients receive optimal health care.
Resident rotations include Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia and Family Practice. They also gain knowledge in diagnostic radiology, pathology of the oral regions and conscious sedation pharmacology. Training and experience is provided in hospital protocol, physical evaluation and the care of the medically compromised patients.
Clinically, they participate in endodontics, operative dentistry, pain control, periodontics, pediatrics, prosthetics, simple orthodontics, oral surgery, implant placement and restoration, and special care dentistry. A dedicated staff of dental assistants, hygienists and office personnel support the patient care activities. Affiliation with the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine strengthens the resident’s training by providing additional opportunities for clinical research and access to educational programs.
The program includes medical science conferences and didactic courses in the dental specialties. Attendance at Lehigh Valley Health Network / University of Pennsylvania lecture continuing dental education series is a highlight of the academic year. This continuing education program consists of eight full day courses given by nationally recognized speakers in various dental and practice management specialties. Residents also attend one day at the Valley Forge Dental Conference.
CPR certification is required prior to beginning the residency program, and ACLS is provided by the hospital during orientation week. Residents are on call to evaluate and treat dental emergencies and traumas, and to perform inpatient consultations at both the 17th and Chew Street site as well as the Cedar Crest site. Residents rotate on-call one week at a time and call is taken from home.
Upon completion of this training, the dentist will understand medical therapy of the entire body and its relation to oral disease, achieve a greater understanding of community health needs and be able to contribute to the advancement of hospital dentistry.
